Reading the letters, cards and telegrams sent at the wake of ASIN bandleader Cesar "Saro" Banares in Koronadal, South Cotabato last March (1993) , I came across the note of Popong Landero. I cannot remember the exact words he said but I do remember reading PAIN in that letter.

But towards the end of that note, HOPE.

If I'm not mistaken, Popong read the "balita" about Saro's senseless murder while he was in Zamboanga del Sur.

I am not sure if PANAW, the first song on Side A {a capella) was triggered /inspired by Saro's death. (Ooppss, yes, indeed, the songbook says).

SA LILIM NG LUNTIAN, according to the songbook, " was conceived (on October 3, 1990) when I was about to jingle."

That makes "jingling" very potent, indeed, for composing, because unknown to most, Saro's MASDAN MO ANG KAPALIGIRAN was actually conceived while Saro was also "jingling".

PANAW and SA LILIM NG LUNTIAN and the rest of the songs of Popong always give you the feeling of PAIN. GRIEF. RAGE. But always, HOPE.

Popong is as Mindanao as his instruments, as Mindanao as his thoughts and feelings.

For Mindanao, too, is PAIN. GRIEF. RAGE. HOPE.
